Sturgis / Route 66 Epic Tour
A few year's back we did Route 66 Chicago to Amarillo. This year it's time to do the other half, Los Angeles to Amarillo.
Our tour departs Johannesburg on Friday 24th July 2015, getting into Los Angeles the day afternoon. We rest a night before picking up our bikes the next morning, Sunday 26th July. From here we head to Las Vegas, the scenic route over the mountains past Big Bear Lake and into the desert..
Monday morning we pick up Route 66 again heading to Williams, Arizona a distance of 216 miles. Tuesday we take a short detour north to the spectacular Grand Canyon before heading back to Flagstaff to rejoin the 66 for Holbrook, Arizona, a distance of 228 miles. Wednesday we head east again on 66 for Albuquerque, New Mexico, distance 235 miles. Our final day on Route 66, Thursday, takes us to Amarillo, Texas, 285 miles. Here we stay at the legendary Big Texan Hotel & Steakhouse - eat a 2kg steak in an hour and you get it free!
From Amarillo we head north to an old Colorado town called Trinidad, distance 236 miles. Saturday we join up with the Sturgis Group in Sidney, Nebraska, one of our longest rides, 318 miles. Please see itinerary below for the rest of the trip - from Sidney!
Sturgis 75th Anniversary Tour
This tour departs Johannesburg on Thursday 30th July arriving in Denver the next day. We overnight in Denver and rst overnight before picking up bikes on Saturday morning. From here we take a short ride, 170 miles, to Sidney, Nebraska. Here we meet up with the Route 66 Tour guys.
Sunday takes us to the biggest Bike Rally in the World - Sturgis Blackhills Rally, a distance of 259 miles.
We stay 6 nights in Sturgis, camping at the Shade Valley Campgrounds. Tents and bedding are provided so you don't have to bring any camping equipment with you. From here you can enjoy the beautiful Black Hills rides to Mount Rushmore, the Needles Highway, Spearfish Canyon and the Devil's Tower. Night life in Sturgis is great, see some of the world's biggest bands at the legendary "Chip"! Visit the world's biggest biker bar - the notorious Full Throttle Saloon and watch some cgae fighting in the Knuckles Saloon!
Saturday 8th August we depart Sturgis for Loveland, back in Colorado, where we prepare ourselves for the mighty Rocky Mountain National Park. Our ride Sunday takes us over the mountains to a height of over 10 000 feet above sea level - dress warmly, this route can be cold! We then wind our way back to Denver where we hand in our bikes and spend the last night in a Denver hotel.
Our flight back home departs Monday morning, arriving back in Johannesburg on Wednesday morning, 12th August.
